Tooth-coloured crown options
- Porcelain Crowns: Requires two appointments to place – no dark gum line.
- Zirconia Crowns: Superior strength of metal combined with the aesthetic appeal of porcelain.
- Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal: A metal base covered with porcelain, requiring two appointments.
Not sure what crown to choose?
We don’t expect you to have the answer right now. Once we’ve examined your oral condition, we can walk you through your options more clearly and make certain recommendations over others.
For example, you might require a crown with superior strength, like Zirconia, as opposed to porcelain.
That said, choosing your type of dental crown often boils down to the aesthetics, the cost and the timescale, with porcelain being the most popular. Porcelain crowns, preferred for their aesthetic appeal, are often custom-made in a dental laboratory and designed to blend flawlessly with existing teeth.
Metal crowns, on the other hand, whilst offering superior strength, do not have the aesthetic advantage. For example, Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal crowns (PFM) have a dark metal line on the gum.
Same day crowns
Please note that some crowns can be ready on the same day as your appointment, while others may require a two-week wait as we await the laboratory’s creation of your crown from your unique impressions.
Dental crowns, often confused with cosmetic procedures like veneers, are not recommended to makeover an entire smile, as seen with certain celebrities going abroad. In these cases, crowns are cheaper to place, thicker and require heavy tooth preparation.
Veneers, on the other hand, are thinner and only require around 0.5mm of preparation.
Crown placement process
Some tooth preparation is required to place a crown, requiring the tooth to be filed down to accommodate the cap. A tooth with minimal structure remaining and requiring a crown for protection might not be a significant concern.
- Examination of the damaged tooth
- Preparation of the affected tooth
- Taking an impression
- Custom crafting your new crown
- Placement of the ceramic cap on top
