Tooth extraction procedure
- The tooth’s position, root shape and formation are evaluated
- The patient’s tolerance, attitude and disposition are discussed to see if sedation should be administered.
- Patients can be offered support and relaxing gas if they are particularly anxious.
- The tooth and its root are removed
- Sutures are placed over the socket
Some discomfort can be expected an hour after the procedure, and patients are provided with post-procedure instructions to prevent infection and ensure smooth healing. The next day, everything should feel more normal, with discomfort subsiding.
Try to save the tooth and avoid extraction
In some scenarios, we can avoid a tooth extraction with advanced procedures like root canals and apicoectomies, which can remove damaged tissue and save the tooth.
Root canals cost from £458 and will likely be a patient’s last resort to save their tooth. However, root canals often use dental crowns as a final restoration to cover the entire tooth for additional strength and functionality.
Ideal next steps after tooth removal
Patients don’t often like being left with a gap in the mouth, especially in the visible portions of the smile. But don’t worry; dentistry has advanced away from partial dentures, which are not always the most favourable missing tooth solution.
For example, dental implants are the most life-like tooth replacement method available in today’s dentistry and offer patients the chance to replace a missing tooth for up to 20-30 years.
For £2,780, patients can have an artificial titanium tooth root positioned into their jawbone to prevent bone loss, tooth shifting and further tooth loss caused by ignored missing teeth.

“I have been seeing George for several years now, and his work is always impeccable. He does both the check-ups and cleaning for my regular visits, which I like, and my teeth always feel so clean, and I feel assured of the health of my teeth and gums after his inspection.” Chris, London
