Types of porcelain crown
- Porcelain crowns: The porcelain tooth cap will take two appointments to place.
- Zirconia crowns: Combines the strength of metal with the tooth-like appeal of porcelain.
- Porcelain-fused to metal: Metal base covered with porcelain made in the lab and placed within 20-30 minutes.
Which type of crown should you choose?
Choosing the right crown type and material will ultimately depend on your budget and preference.
Porcelain crowns are popular because of their aesthetic appeal, as they are hand-crafted in a dental laboratory and designed to blend perfectly with existing teeth.
Metal crowns, whilst offering superior strength, do not offer patients the aesthetic advantage they hoped for, as some, like Porcelain-fused to metal, feature a dark line on the gum, which is not always such a problem if you have a crown for your back molar.
Zirconium crowns also offer superior strength and are known to be the longest-lasting.
But generally, all crowns, even porcelain, last up to 30 years. Opting for a porcelain crown is recommended if your goal is purely cosmetic.
Placing a crown
The tooth must be filed down to fit the cap to place a crown.
If you have little tooth structure remaining and have a crown to protect the underlying tooth, this won’t be too much of a problem.
However, if you’ve been recommended a crown to makeover your smile, it will be better to choose veneers, which only remove 0.5 mm of enamel, instead of filing the tooth down to a stub.
The steps to replacing a crown:
- Examining the damaged tooth
- Preparing the affected tooth
- Taking an impression
- Custom-making your new crown
- Placing the ceramic cap on top
Please note that some crowns are ready within the same day, but the types of crowns we offer will require a two-week wait as we wait for the laboratory to make your crown from your unique impressions.

“I visited Dr Druttman for a clean today and he was kind enough to slot me in for some cosmetic repairs to my broken front teeth and a worn-down incisor, without a separate booking.” Harry, London
