Types of modern dental crowns we offer

Thankfully, several types of dental crowns are available in today’s dentistry, from metal to porcelain, to even porcelain fused to metal, all of which have greater aesthetic appeal. Each type has unique benefits and strengths and caters to specific areas in the mouth, whether it’s a molar, premolar, canine or incisor.

We are cosmetic dentists at heart, and at our practice in central London, we offer only the best quality crowns with superior strength, durability, and aesthetics.

“I can’t speak highly enough about this practice and in particular George Druttman who has been my dentist for the last 20 years.”

Full porcelain crowns

  • Strength: 200 MPA
  • Durability: 5-15 years
  • Aesthetics: Life-like translucency
  • Cost: From £950

Porcelain crowns are designed to mimic the natural appearance of teeth and can be used for posterior and front teeth, providing a safer solution for patients with metal allergies.

Lasting up to 15 years and mimicking the toughness of enamel, porcelain crowns offer the best value for money regarding their discreetness and aesthetics. They’re custom-made and can perfectly replicate the hue of a patient’s natural tooth, making them nearly impossible to spot and distinguish.

Porcelain crowns over a metal base

  • Metal porcelain crowns are durable, lasting up to 26 years
  • Natural-looking and translucent in colour
  • Better choice for patients with little room between teeth
  • Prices from £950

Metal porcelain crowns are the most robust and durable of other dental crowns and combine the strength of metal with the translucency of porcelain, which means patients can benefit from better durability and improved aesthetics compared to porcelain-fused metal crowns, which feature a dark line at the gum.

What crowns are used for:

  • Improving the appearance of a cracked or chipped tooth.
  • Restoring damaged or heavily decayed teeth.
  • To support a dental bridge or as a final restoration for a dental implant.
  • To complete root canal treatment and protect the tooth.
  • Support and strengthen a worn-down tooth.
  • When a dental filling or inlay and onlay is not suitable due to a lack of tooth structure remaining.
  • To preserve your natural tooth for the future and restore the shape and size of the tooth.

Why you’ll need a crown

If you’ve been prescribed or recommended a dental crown, the treatment will likely be essential for protecting your damaged tooth and, at the same time, restoring the shape and size of the decayed tooth.

The perfect solution for all age groups, dental crowns prevent bacteria from entering the tooth pulp, causing infection and persistent pain that might cause you to lose your tooth.

Materials tooth crowns are made from

Permanent crowns can be made from various materials, each with benefits and drawbacks.

  • Gold: Strong, safe, and durable, but the yellow colour makes it very unnatural and can be used in less visible areas. Longest-lasting but least used.
  • Full Porcelain: Aesthetic, hard-wearing, safe, solid, but can fracture under heavy jaw pressure. Best for front, visible teeth.
  • Porcelain bonded to metal: The strong metal base is fully covered with porcelain. It may not be as natural-looking as porcelain, but it can be ideal for side and back teeth like molars, which are out of sight.
  • Zirconia crowns: Highly durable, monolithic ceramic, stronger and split-resistant than glass and composite.
  • Emax crowns: Machined from a lithium disilicate ceramic that is metal-free and popular due to their translucent properties that mimic natural enamel.
  • CEREC crowns: CEREC crowns are same-day crowns available the same day as your appointment using digital dentistry, which means you won’t have to wear a temporary or wait for your final crown to be made in a lab.

See When and why does a dentist recommend a crown for a tooth?

What happens after you have a crown fitted?

It’s normal to expect some discomfort after having a crown fitted, with the toot initially feeling strange and sensitive. However, patients can expect this to settle within 24-72 hours. Soreness around the gum is also normal, but over a few days, it will restore to a healthy, pink condition.

Are there any alternative for crowns?

Crowns are used normally when there is little tooth structure remaining, so their alternative treatment, usually a filling, is only applicable if there’s enough tooth structure remaining. Veneers are the alternative to crowns in cosmetic makeovers and are much better as they keep the tooth structure intact and only remove a small portion of the enamel. Heavily damaged teeth can also be replaced with a dental implant.

Dental crown procedure – what’s involved?

We’ll start by taking an impression to fit your temporary crown while a lab technician customises your permanent one. Your final crown will be colour-matched to surrounding teeth to ensure it looks as natural as possible. Treatment typically takes two appointments over three weeks.

Procedure steps:

  1. The outside of a weak tooth is to be cut back approximately 1.5mm all around.
  2. An impression (mould) is taken of the prepared tooth.
  3. A temporary crown is fitted on top of the damaged tooth.
  4. A dental lab sculpts your porcelain crown on a mould taken from the impression.
  5. Your final, permanent crown is fitted and cemented into place.

Book a consultation

There are so many crown types and materials to choose from, so it’s always best to consult a dentist on which one will be best for you. For example, molars and rear teeth require stronger chewing capabilities, so a crown with superior strength will be better for distributing biting forces.

If you’re looking into crowns to makeover your smile, you might want to explore other cosmetic treatments to preserve your natural smile as best as possible – and a consultation is a great introduction to see what’s possible with your smile and what it will cost to achieve the smile of your dreams.

You’ll likely want the best when choosing a dentist to fit your crown. Dr Druttman, our principal dentist and prosthetic specialist, has fitted thousands of crowns over his career spanning over 30 years, making him a favourite for patients in London looking to restore their worn teeth.

I've been seeing George for over 15 years. One of my best decisions. Teeth needed serious attention and were immediately "rescued". They have been maintained to an excellent level ever since. Fantastic treatment and continuing results.

American 🇺🇸 Pilot with a very busy schedule. Was in London of one of my many layovers summer 2023. Had not been to a dentist in sometime. Was in need of a deep scaling for oral hygiene and start pains of a Carrie. I’m one of those and for all work completed under N20 (Nitrous Oxide Gas) for seems to be only way. He was able to see me and complete this matter swiftly and professionally. Didn’t scare me out of the chair. Recommend this practice and would return on a layover.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting CapCityDental for a dental cleaning, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. As someone who prioritizes oral health, I've had my fair share of dental appointments, but this one truly stood out. From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed and at ease, setting the tone for a fantastic dental cleaning session. The moment I stepped into the clinic, the friendly receptionist - Michael, greeted me with a warm smile and efficiently took care of the check-in process. The waiting area was clean, comfortable, and featured modern decor that helped create a relaxing atmosphere. It was clear that the staff at at CapCityDental value professionalism and patient comfort. Dr. George, the senior dental hygienist was a true expert in his field. He took the time to explain the entire cleaning process, making sure I was comfortable and informed every step of the way. Indeed, it did feel like a warm hug. Furthermore, his dental nurse Marilou was just a gem. Her gentle yet thorough approach put me at ease, and I could sense her commitment to delivering top-notch oral care. It's evident that CapCityDental has a team that's passionate about what they do. What truly sets CapCityDental apart was their dedication to personalized care and patient education. The hygienist nurse took the time to discuss my oral health habits and offered valuable insights on how to improve my routine. She answered all my questions patiently, showing a genuine interest in my oral health journey. This level of individualized attention left a lasting impression on me. In conclusion, my dental cleaning experience at CapCityDental was nothing short of outstanding. From the moment I walked in to the moment I left, I felt valued as a patient and confident in the care I received. The professionalism, expertise, and genuine concern for patient well-being were evident throughout. I wholeheartedly recommend this clinic to anyone seeking exceptional dental care in a welcoming and modern environment. I'm already looking forward to my next visit!

I have been so incredibly impressed with my experiences at CAP City Dental. George has been so professional, caring and clearly has a wealth of experience within dentistry. I have had a variety of treatments over many years with George and he is the only dentist I have ever come across that has been able to ease my anxiety surrounding dental treatment. The new Austin Friars premises is so well located in the heart of London and it’s actually a tranquil experience to attend appointments.100% recommended!

George and his team have been looking after me for almost 10 years now. When George took me on, my teeth were in a very sorry state. Since then George has worked very hard to improve the function, health and look of my teeth. Thanks to George I only require routine checkups and the odd piece of work now. Seeing George has made going to the dentist a breeze and a very happy social occasion! I can’t recommend George highly enough. The best dentist I’ve ever had. Very attentive and caring…with exquisite attention to detail; second to none. I should also mention that the new location in Austin Friars is a lovely calm oasis in the heart of the City. Modern health setting in a historic built environment. Thanks George.

I had a tooth that was causing me severe pain. I was feeling highly anxious because my previous dentist treated the wrong tooth. My childhood orthodontist left me with an occlusion and had taken out too many teeth. I was having trouble finding a dentist who would not only treat my gaps and cavities, but would also provide an unbiased opinion of my previous treatments. After appointments with other clinics, I found Cap City Dental. Dr Druttman, Marilou, Reni and Michael were welcoming. They helped me correct years of problems in just three visits over as many weeks. The team genuinely try to understand what you are trying to achieve. They don’t push you to have work done. I particularly appreciated Dr Druttman’s comprehensive reports in which he provided his professional opinion on what happened and what should happen moving forward. I highly recommend them not only because they make sure you feel comfortable, but provide you with enough information to ensure you can make an informed decision.
