Dental Implant Procedure

What You Need to Know About The Dental Implant Procedure

The dental implant procedure is relatively simple and, depending on the number of implants you require, will only take a few hours to complete. Reported to be pain-free by many patients, we understand that others might feel nervous about undergoing the surgery, and if you’re a particularly phobic patient, you can relax knowing that we’re licensed to provide sedation dentistry and gas and air to help ease you into the procedure.

Procedure overview

The dental implant procedure carried out under local anaesthetic will see the oral surgeon insert a titanium screw into your jawbone for it to act like an artificial tooth root. Once the screw has been implanted and healed, we’ll be able to connect the abutment to it, which will anchor your new replacement teeth on top, whether it be a crown, bridge or denture.

A few weeks later, once the site around the gums has healed, we can attach your final restoration, and you’ll be ready to live life to the fullest again.

Before surgery

Before the procedure, you would have had a dental implant consultation consisting of a CBCT scan and several X-rays to allow our dentists to plan your implant placement accurately.

The scans are also vital for showing the density of bone where the implant is to be placed so we can assess whether there’s enough bone to withstand the implant. In some cases, where there has been a breakdown of bone, mostly caused by tooth loss, we’ll have first to carry out a pre-prosthetic procedure called a bone graft to regenerate bone in this area to give your implant a better chance at success.

The procedure itself

In some cases, the implant can be placed, and the crown inserted the same day or temporarily loaded, as with All on 4. However, this is dependent on the type of implant treatment you need. That said, the general implant placement procedure is the same for all.

For example, the common procedure is broken into three parts; placing the implant (first day); placing the abutment (three months later), placing the final restoration (few weeks later). In the first phase, the dentist will make an incision in your gums to surgically place the implant into the jawbone, where the missing tooth is located.

Once it’s been successfully positioned, we will close the gums over the implant to keep it covered.

Preparation for surgery

After your assessment confirms you’re in good health and a surgical plan is developed, we can schedule you for your surgery appointment. Please note that if you’ve opted for IV sedation, you must arrange for someone to escort you home afterwards. Before the surgery, please eat a light meal a couple of hours before – however, if you’re opting for IV, do not eat anything after midnight the night before the surgery to ensure your stomach is empty.

Healing stages

Following the procedure, we will need to allow for a period of healing called osseointegration, which will take a minimum of three months for the dental implant to fuse with the jawbone. Allowing for this time means we give the jawbone enough time to grow around the implant to ensure it is strong enough to stay in place.

It’s important to bear in mind that each patient heals differently, so it can take up to six months before we can place the final prosthetic, but with some patients, it can be done in three, and in other instances, on the same day.

You’ll recover at home and be invited in for the second phase of the procedure a few months later after the titanium implant bonds with the bone. You should expect to recover quite quickly with any discomfort subsiding within a few days, commencing back to normal activities within the week.

After the procedure, some slight swelling should be expected alongside minor bleeding, with the dentist giving instructions to eat soft foods during this time while you’re healing. Over-the-counter medications like Ibuprofen can also be used to manage any discomfort.

I've been seeing George for over 15 years. One of my best decisions. Teeth needed serious attention and were immediately "rescued". They have been maintained to an excellent level ever since. Fantastic treatment and continuing results.

American 🇺🇸 Pilot with a very busy schedule. Was in London of one of my many layovers summer 2023. Had not been to a dentist in sometime. Was in need of a deep scaling for oral hygiene and start pains of a Carrie. I’m one of those and for all work completed under N20 (Nitrous Oxide Gas) for seems to be only way. He was able to see me and complete this matter swiftly and professionally. Didn’t scare me out of the chair. Recommend this practice and would return on a layover.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting CapCityDental for a dental cleaning, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. As someone who prioritizes oral health, I've had my fair share of dental appointments, but this one truly stood out. From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed and at ease, setting the tone for a fantastic dental cleaning session. The moment I stepped into the clinic, the friendly receptionist - Michael, greeted me with a warm smile and efficiently took care of the check-in process. The waiting area was clean, comfortable, and featured modern decor that helped create a relaxing atmosphere. It was clear that the staff at at CapCityDental value professionalism and patient comfort. Dr. George, the senior dental hygienist was a true expert in his field. He took the time to explain the entire cleaning process, making sure I was comfortable and informed every step of the way. Indeed, it did feel like a warm hug. Furthermore, his dental nurse Marilou was just a gem. Her gentle yet thorough approach put me at ease, and I could sense her commitment to delivering top-notch oral care. It's evident that CapCityDental has a team that's passionate about what they do. What truly sets CapCityDental apart was their dedication to personalized care and patient education. The hygienist nurse took the time to discuss my oral health habits and offered valuable insights on how to improve my routine. George and his team have been looking after me for almost 10 years now. When George took me on, my teeth were in a very sorry state. Since then George has worked very hard to improve the function, health and look of my teeth. Thanks to George I only require routine checkups and the odd piece of work now. Seeing George has made going to the dentist a breeze and a very happy social occasion! I can’t recommend George highly enough. The best dentist I’ve ever had. Very attentive and caring…with exquisite attention to detail; second to none. I should also mention that the new location in Austin Friars is a lovely calm oasis in the heart of the City. Modern health setting in a historic built environment. Thanks George.

I had a tooth that was causing me severe pain. I was feeling highly anxious because my previous dentist treated the wrong tooth. My childhood orthodontist left me with an occlusion and had taken out too many teeth. I was having trouble finding a dentist who would not only treat my gaps and cavities, but would also provide an unbiased opinion of my previous treatments. After appointments with other clinics, I found Cap City Dental. Dr Druttman, Marilou, Reni and Michael were welcoming. They helped me correct years of problems in just three visits over as many weeks. The team genuinely try to understand what you are trying to achieve. They don’t push you to have work done. I particularly appreciated Dr Druttman’s comprehensive reports in which he provided his professional opinion on what happened and what should happen moving forward. I highly recommend them not only because they make sure you feel comfortable, but provide you with enough information to ensure you can make an informed decision.
