The procedure itself
In some cases, the implant can be placed, and the crown inserted the same day or temporarily loaded, as with All on 4. However, this is dependent on the type of implant treatment you need. That said, the general implant placement procedure is the same for all.
For example, the common procedure is broken into three parts; placing the implant (first day); placing the abutment (three months later), placing the final restoration (few weeks later). In the first phase, the dentist will make an incision in your gums to surgically place the implant into the jawbone, where the missing tooth is located.
Once it’s been successfully positioned, we will close the gums over the implant to keep it covered.
Preparation for surgery
After your assessment confirms you’re in good health and a surgical plan is developed, we can schedule you for your surgery appointment. Please note that if you’ve opted for IV sedation, you must arrange for someone to escort you home afterwards. Before the surgery, please eat a light meal a couple of hours before – however, if you’re opting for IV, do not eat anything after midnight the night before the surgery to ensure your stomach is empty.
Following the procedure, we will need to allow for a period of healing called osseointegration, which will take a minimum of three months for the dental implant to fuse with the jawbone. Allowing for this time means we give the jawbone enough time to grow around the implant to ensure it is strong enough to stay in place.
It’s important to bear in mind that each patient heals differently, so it can take up to six months before we can place the final prosthetic, but with some patients, it can be done in three, and in other instances, on the same day.
You’ll recover at home and be invited in for the second phase of the procedure a few months later after the titanium implant bonds with the bone. You should expect to recover quite quickly with any discomfort subsiding within a few days, commencing back to normal activities within the week.
After the procedure, some slight swelling should be expected alongside minor bleeding, with the dentist giving instructions to eat soft foods during this time while you’re healing. Over-the-counter medications like Ibuprofen can also be used to manage any discomfort.
